In 1998, DVxT presented Lynn Seifert’s Coyote Ugly at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre starring Waneta Storms. Our inaugural production won Dora Awards for Outstanding Female Performance and Sound Design.
In 2000, we commissioned and premiered a new translation of Ibsen’s classic The Doll House by John Murrell at CanStage’s Berkeley Street Theatre Upstairs. The Doll House starred Fiona Byrne and Ben Carlson and won an unprecedented seven Dora Awards for: Outstanding Production, Direction, Female Performance, Male Performance, Set Design, Costume Design and Sound Design.
In July 2003, DVxT was proud to be the first independent theatre company to co-produce with Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre. We presented Samuel Beckett's Happy Days to critical acclaim; Martha Burns was nominated for a Dora Award for her beautiful performance.
In November 2003, in association with CanStage, we commissioned and premiered Adam Pettle's Mosley and Me, a two-handed poker thriller starring Randy Hughson and Alex Poch-Goldin.
In March 2005, in association with Theatre Passe Muraille, we premiered Toronto playwright Andrew Shay Hahn’s St. Christopher, starring Lisa Norton. Costume designer Shawn Kerwin was nominated for a Dora for her winsome period costumes.
Last season, DVxT embarked on a three-year, three-phase project to select, adapt and produce an English restoration comedy to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Currently in phase two, we have commissioned actor and playwright Rick Roberts to adapt Sir John Vanbrugh’s 1697 classic, The Provok’d Wife.
